RIIWHS202E Enter and Work in Confined Spaces

This course is essential for individuals working in operational roles where they are required to enter and work safely in confined spaces.

Confined spaces may include, but are not limited to:

  • Vats, tanks and pressure vessels

  • Pits, pipes and sewers

  • Silos, chimneys and shafts

  • Wells, trenches and tunnels


Language, Literacy and Numeracy (ACSF)

To successfully complete this course, participants should have skills aligned to the following Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF) levels:

  • Reading: Level 2–3

  • Writing: Level 2

  • Oral Communication: Level 2–3

  • Learning: Level 2

  • Numeracy: Level 2

Participants must be able to interpret WHS legislation, confined space signage, permits and workplace procedures; communicate effectively with team members; maintain records; and follow safe entry and exit processes.

Course Overview

This unit covers the skills and knowledge required to safely enter and work in confined spaces, including:

  • Safety requirements and relevant legislation

  • Identifying confined spaces and associated hazards

  • Signage, permits and isolation procedures

  • Use of equipment and PPE

  • Maintaining communication while working in confined spaces

  • Safe exiting procedures

  • Housekeeping, clean-up and record keeping

This course meets the requirements of Australian Standard AS/NZS 2865:2009 – Confined Spaces.


Who Should Attend?

This course is suitable for anyone working, or intending to work:

  • On construction sites

  • In infrastructure, resources or industrial environments

  • In workplaces where confined spaces may be present


Certification

Upon successful completion of assessment tasks, students will be awarded a:

  • Statement of Attainment for
    RIIWHS202E – Enter and Work in Confined Spaces


Do I Need to Refresh?

While this unit does not have a formal expiry date, WHS legislation requires that competencies be regularly reassessed.

Refresher training is recommended:

  • Every two (2) years, due to changes in:

    • WHS legislation and regulations

    • Codes of Practice

    • Australian and industry standards

    • Equipment and technology

  • Every three (3) years, as general best practice

  • If the qualification has not been used in the industry within the last two (2) years
