RIISS00055 Traffic Management Implementer Skill Set
This combined course provides the skills and knowledge required for personnel working in temporary traffic management roles, including controlling traffic and implementing approved traffic management plans at work sites.
It is an ideal entry point for those seeking to establish or progress a career in the traffic control and traffic management industry.
Language, Literacy and Numeracy (ACSF)
To successfully complete this course, participants should have skills aligned to the following Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF) levels:

Reading: Level 2–3

Writing: Level 2
-
Oral Communication: Level 2–3

Learning: Level 2
-
Numeracy: Level 2
-
Digital Skills: Level 2
Participants must be able to read and interpret traffic management plans, workplace procedures and safety signage, communicate clearly with team members and road users, assess risk, complete documentation, and follow SafeWork NSW and WHS requirements.

Course Overview
RIISS00054 – Traffic Controller Skill Set
This skill set addresses the skills and knowledge required for personnel responsible for stopping and starting traffic using a stop/slow bat or boom gate in temporary traffic management situations.
This course:
-
Is suitable for new entrants to the traffic control industry
-
Allows participants to work as a traffic controller
-
Does not qualify participants to set up or modify traffic control plans
RIISS00055 – Traffic Management Implementer Skill Set
This skill set addresses the skills and knowledge required to implement an approved traffic management plan in the immediate vicinity of a workplace.
This course:
-
Is suited to those with traffic controller experience wishing to progress
-
Covers implementing, not modifying, traffic control plans
-
Does not qualify participants to control traffic using a stop/slow bat
Course Structure & Duration
-
Two (2) days of theory and practical training covering both skill sets
-
Third day practical assessment conducted on a live site
-
The third day practical component is included in the course price
This structure enables participants to complete all requirements needed to work onsite as a traffic controller.
Certification & Card Issue
Upon successful completion of training:
-
Students will receive a SafeWork NSW Statement of Completion (SOC) for both skill sets
-
The SOC allows participants to work immediately and is valid for 90 days
Upon successful completion of the final practical assessment:
-
Students will be issued a Statement of Attainment
-
SafeWork NSW will issue a Traffic Control Work Training (TCWT) Card for:

Traffic Controller
-
Implement Traffic Control Plans
-
-
TCWT cards are typically issued within 90 days of course completion
Units of Competency
Successful participants will be awarded Statements of Attainment for the following units:

RIICOM201E – Communicate in the workplace

RIIWHS201E – Work safely and follow WHS policies and procedures

RIIWHS205E – Control traffic with stop/slow bat
-
RIIWHS206 – Control traffic with portable traffic control devices and temporary traffic signs

RIIRIS301E – Apply risk management processes

RIIWHS302E – Implement traffic management plans
-
RIIWHS303 – Position, set up and program portable traffic control devices
Entry Requirements & Prerequisites
Participants must meet the following requirements:
-
Be 17 years of age or older on the day training commences
-
Provide 100 points of original identification (no photocopies accepted)
-
Hold a current White Card and provide evidence prior to final assessment
-
Attend the final assessment wearing:
-
Long pants
-
Long-sleeve shirt
-
Enclosed work boots
-
Additional Information
This course provides training for personnel who are required to:

Control traffic using a stop/slow bat
-
Set up and work within approved traffic control guidance plans at a work site
