Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA)

SITHFAB021 Provide Responsible Service of Alcohol

This course provides the mandatory training required to sell, serve, or supply alcohol in New South Wales. NSW liquor laws require anyone working in the liquor industry to hold a current RSA competency card.

Important:
If you already hold a current (not expired) RSA, you are not eligible to attend this course. RSA refresher training must be completed online through Service NSW.


Language, Literacy and Numeracy (ACSF)

To successfully complete this course, participants should have skills aligned to the following Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF) levels:

  • Reading: Level 2–3

  • Writing: Level 2

  • Oral Communication: Level 2–3

  • Learning: Level 2

  • Numeracy: Level 2

Participants must be able to interpret regulatory and workplace policies, verify identification documents, calculate standard drinks, and communicate clearly with patrons and colleagues, including managing difficult situations and refusing service when required.
Support options can be discussed at enrolment if required.


Who Needs RSA Training?

RSA training is essential for anyone who sells, serves, or supplies alcohol in NSW, including:

  • Licensees and venue managers

  • Bar, restaurant, and club staff

  • Security and crowd control personnel

  • Promotional staff and volunteers

  • Workers in wineries, breweries, distilleries, and packaged liquor outlets


Course Content

This course includes the national unit of competency SITHFAB021 Provide Responsible Service of Alcohol and NSW-specific requirements, covering:

  • NSW liquor laws and responsible service obligations

  • Identifying and managing intoxication and refusing service

  • ID checks, minors, and secondary supply

  • Harm minimisation strategies

  • Compliance, enforcement, and workplace responsibilities


Certification & Card Issue

Upon successful completion of this course:

  • Students will receive a Statement of Attainment

  • Students will receive an Interim Certificate from Liquor & Gaming NSW

  • The Interim Certificate must be taken to Service NSW within 3 months to obtain your RSA competency card

  • RSA competency cards are valid for five (5) years

Participants must provide valid photo identification on the day of training.
